Apple (AAPL) Picking Season

Started a quarter position in Apple Computer, Inc. (AAPL) to increase my tech exposure on Friday, 9.8.06. I admit I was trying to get in before the Apple conference on Tuesday, when the new iPods, iTV, and movies on iTunes was released. Still, Apple’s innovative products and attempt to move into the living room makes this a good investment in the next 6-18 months, which is the time frame I’ll be holding for. After ditching Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU) the week before that, I still feel tech’s one of the few sectors to be in going forward. While I’ve been trying to do my best in recession-proofing my portfolio with food and drug stocks, I believe the tech rally really takes off going into the school/holiday season. Then, tech should be one of the top beneficiaries coming out of the winter as I believe the Fed will cut rates early in ’07.

With my largest tech position in cell phones – Nokia CP ADR (NOK) and another decent holding for the internet/broadband play – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM), I wanted to diversify my tech position into the big bluechip hardware of somekind. I’m not really buying the Hewlett Packard Co. (HPQ) run recently, not so hot on Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) either until we get closer to Vista, and definitely bearish on Dell Inc. (DELL), which left me with Apple.

I suppose I could’ve replaced Sohu with other best-of-breed pure internet stocks like Google (GOOG) or Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO). I’ll say I like Google here better than Yahoo and, while I’m sure Google will go much higher, I’m already in the internet space with Akamai. Sure, Akamai’s largest customer is Apple’s iTunes store, but Apple is mostly a hardware play as Apple makes little or nothing from iTunes but tries to sell the hardware.

Yes Jeff, definitely agree on the tech stocks rising during the back-to-school and christmas period. It’s almost a de-facto knowledge in the cube world that tech stocks rather, um, stagnate during summer. I wish I had some liquidity too, and not under so much credit card debt. *sigh*
