Corning Lights it up with nanoStructure Optical Fiber

At the Fiber-to-the-Home Conference on Sept. 30 – Oct. 3, Corning (GLW) is set to introduce its full suite of optical fiber, cable and hardware and equipment solutions based on its nanoStructures technology platform. On July 23rd, Corning announced the gigantic breakthrough in fiber optic technology- optical fiber cables based on nanoStructures technology that allows cabled fiber to be bent around very tight corners with virtually no signal loss.

Opportunity International gratefully accepts gifts of securities, both publicly-traded and closely-held.

Optical fiber is superior in all aspects to traditional copper cables in transmitting everything from broadband internet, TV, and digital telephone- all aspects except maintaining the quality of the signal in bends, twists, and other abusive configurations. The reason is the light used to transmit the signal travels in a straight line. Having not been able to bend optical fiber as you could copper cable, using optical fiber in tight installations such as in apartments were not possible…leaving a large untapped market. It is unclear how Corning’s geniuses figured out how to overcome this old problem handicapping the use of fiber optic cables. The nanoStructures technology used suggests the glass composing the fiber optics have been engineered to the smallest microscopic detail such that the light transmitting the data always travels in a straight line. This is similar to how a super-closeup of the edge of a circle will look like a straight line. Read the rest of this entry »

Jeff’s Holiday Shopping Gift Set

Ok, so not the full stock analysis reports I mentioned I’ll be posting just yet. With the big runup of the stocks of retail companies recently (in anticipation of holiday shopping), I am a little uncomfortable recommending or mentioning any attractive retail stocks at the moment. However, read this article by MarketWatch on Black Friday shopping if you want to see how the retail sector did. I want to go back to Mastercard (MA) and Akamai (AKAM) as my holiday shopping plays. These are two of my favorite stocks that I own and have mentioned before on this site. Read the rest of this entry »

DivX, Inc. and Video Compression

I’ve been waiting for DivX, Inc. (DIVX) come public ever since I heard about their plan for an IPO (Initial Public Offering, when you are first able to buy a company’s stock publically in the stock market). DivX has the best quality and dependability for digital videos in my opinion and should do well going forward as more and more movies and video are in the digital format and are available online. DivX‘s bread and butter are its line of compression/decompression software. Read the rest of this entry »

Movie Review: Invincible

invincible_poster

The Walt Disney Company (Quote: DIS) scores another hit with Invincible. I strongly recommend watching this inspirational movie for anyone and everyone, although I was the only one in the theater under 60 when I saw it yesterday (maybe because it was the noon showing on a weekday). I did not know Vince Papale’s amazing story going into the movie, that and the fact that it was a true story made the unfolding of events exciting and moving. Read the rest of this entry »
